Episode 03: The Indie Rocker- Matt Mays
I met up with Matt Mays at the Calgary Folk Festival, on a hot summer’s day by the banks of the Bow River. A great day for a walk.
We talked about the hoser vibe, a musician’s confidence, playing the Big Stage, and being newly sober— 90 meetings in 90 days battling “the only disease you can get yelled at for having.”
Matt is a Canadian indie singer/songwriter known for his work with The Guthries and Matt Mays & El Torpedo. His hit “Cocaine Cowgirl” and the award-winning album Coyote are standout moments in his career.
Mays’ music blends indie rock with folk and art rock, and he’s a multi-instrumentalist, skilled in guitar, harmonica, and more. His influence on the Canadian music scene is marked by his Juno nominations and wins, showcasing his enduring impact as an artist.
Mays continues to be a dynamic force in rock’n’roll, with a career that reflects his passion for music and his dedication to his craft.
